Soil investigation is a process to determine the physical and mechanical properties of natural soil layers. Soil investigation is required to evaluate the suitability of the project to the project site. Complete information about land and buildings is needed to determine a suitable, practical, safe and economical foundation.

In order for students to understand more about various things regarding soil investigation, on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at 19.00-21.00 WIB, the Lecturer of Engineering Geology and Geotechnical subjects with Field 1 Diklar Geological Engineering Student Association of Magmadipa XVII Undip held a Public Lecture on “Geotechnical Investigations”. The public lecture was delivered by one of the alumni of the Geological Engineering Department class of 2008 namely Sigit Prasetyo, ST, who is now a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at PT. Hydrocore. This public lecture was conducted online using the MS Teams application which was attended by 243 participants, consisting of lecturers and undergraduate students of Geological Engineering Undip.

During the activity, the speaker explained how geotechnical investigations were carried out both onshore, nearshore and offshore. The investigation stage starts from drilling, logging, in situ test, sampling, laboratory testing and reporting. From these investigation stages, each has its own benefits, such as in-situ tests for analysis of the bearing capacity of soil/rocks and foundations, while laboratory testing is for example to calculate soil subsidence.

This general lecture material is very useful because it provides an introduction to the application of geotenics and engineering geology in the world of work, especially for field and laboratory testing in onshore, coastal and offshore areas.
