History

Reliable human resources in every fields is a basic needs in developing countries. Based on Law number 22 of 1999 concerning regional autonomy, more than 340 administrative regions in Indonesia will explore all the potential of both natural resources and  human resources. To support the utilization of natural and geological resources, this country needs competent graduates who are capable and skilled in the field of geological engineering, which includes the concentration of environmental geology, economic geology, energy resources, geodynamics and marine geology.

Geological Engineering is an earth science concerned with the solid Earth, the rocks of which it is composed, and the processes by which they change over time. The earth processes that occur are often related to human life and the environment. The Indonesian region has complex geological conditions with an active seismic zone, active volcano distribution, mineral and energy potential. This condition makes Indonesia rich in geological resources, but also prone to geological disasters. Thus, our country needs skilled geologists who are able to analyze various geological phenomena that are in accordance with the development of science and technology. Approppriate and environmentally friendly geological resource exploration and exploitation will be in their hands. It will support Indonesia as part of ASEAN  market and production base, a highly competitive region, with equitable economic development, and fully integrated into the global economy.

The Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University was established  in 2004. Previously, the Faculty of Engineering of Diponegoro University wanted to play a role in efforts to address human resource needs in the field of geology. By going through various struggles, finally the Ministry of National Education, through the Directorate General of Higher Education, gave permission to establish Geological Engineering Study Program of the Faculty of Engineering, Diponegoro University by Decree No. 3024 / D / T / 2004, dated August 4, 2004.

Initially, the academic and administrative activities of the Geological Engineering Study Program took place at the Faculty of Engineering Joint Lecture Building. In 2008, PT. Pertamina funded the construction of a special building for Geological Engineering. The construction of the building completed smoothly so that from 2010, Geology Engineering occupied Pertamina Sukowati Building, a three-story building covering 1,265 m2 area. In 2022, the Geological Engineering Study Program achieved its Excellent Accreditation by BAN-PT Decree No. no. 5761/SK/BAN-PT/Ak/S/VII/2022.
