In Oil and Gas exploration activities, understanding rock cores/core samples and laboratory analysis is very important. Therefore, to increase understanding of this matter, a workshop on cores and laboratory analysis was held at the Department of Geological Engineering, FT Undip. This activity was carried out through research collaboration between Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) and the Faculty of Engineering Undip-Geoscience Delta Andalan (GDA).

The core workshop activity is one of the closing activities in a series of collaborative study activities between Geological Engineering, FT Undip, GDA and PHE. This workshop was attended by several Undip Geological Engineering lecturers and students, the Delta Andalan Geosain team (GDA) and the Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE) team.

This very interesting event was held on 5-6 February 2024. This 2-day activity took place at the Pertamina Sukowati Building, Undip Geological Engineering Department, Jl. Prof Sudarto SH, Tembalang Semarang. On this occasion, Dr. Andang Bachtiar, M.Sc, who is a non-permanent lecturer in the Department of Geological Engineering and Yulianto Jong, S.T, Dipl-Ing, is the speaker and instructor.

Activities on the first day focused on direct observations and descriptions of core data samples. The core data used comes from JOB Medco Pertamina Simenggaris. Before observing and describing the core samples, all participants received guidance and introductory material from Dr. Andang Bachtiar. The material presented includes how to carry out correct descriptions, the hierarchy of data beliefs for analysis, and also what information can be obtained from samples. After all participants received material from Dr. Andang Bachtiar, the participants then carried out descriptions by looking directly at the core samples, recording information, and making sketches from the samples. At the end of the first day of the workshop, the participants and also Dr. Andang Bachtiar evaluated the results of the description. This aims to ensure that all participants receive correct, good and comprehensive information.

On the second day, the participants received material from Yulianto Jong, S.T, Dipl-Ing from Pertamina Hulu Mahakam. The material presented on the second day focused on how to carry out laboratory analysis results on core and petrophysical data samples. He explained the types of analysis that can be carried out using core data. Apart from that, the speaker also explained how to get complete, good and comprehensive petrophysical analysis results. For time effectiveness, the presenter condensed the material he usually delivered in 5 days into an 8 hour workshop. Even though the material presented was very dense, the participants were very enthusiastic in discussing and asking questions and answering the quiz given by the presenter. This activity really helped open the participants’ insight into core and laboratory analysis carried out in the oil and gas industry.
