The Department of Geological Engineering, Diponegoro University (UNDIP) held a Public Lecture on Hydrogeology on Friday (27/09/24) and Saturday (28/09/2024) which presented two experts from the Center for Groundwater and Environmental Geology (PATGTL) and the Groundwater Conservation Agency, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). This event aims to broaden insights into the exploration, management, and challenges of groundwater conservation in Indonesia, along with the increasing awareness of the importance of sustainable water resources.
Speakers and Discussion Topics
On the first day, Dr. rer.nat. Budi Joko Purnomo, S.T., M.T., who serves as the Groundwater Coordinator at the PATGTL Geological Agency, will discuss three main topics related to groundwater:
- Groundwater Exploration: Methods and techniques used to find and map groundwater reserves in various regions.
- Groundwater Potential: Identification and evaluation of the quantity and quality of available groundwater.
- Groundwater Management: Strategies needed to maintain groundwater sustainability, avoid over-exploitation, and plan proper use.
On the second day, Dr. Taat Setiawan, S.T., M.T. from the Groundwater Conservation Agency will present more technical and in-depth material related to the challenges faced in groundwater conservation and management, namely:
- Pumping Test: A test technique used to determine the production capacity of wells and groundwater flow.
- Groundwater Geochemistry: A chemical study that identifies groundwater quality and its relationship to geological conditions.
- Groundwater Pollution and Seawater Intrusion: Analysis of the causes and impacts of pollution and the phenomenon of seawater intrusion, which is a threat to freshwater resources.
- Land Subsidence: A phenomenon of land subsidence that often occurs due to excessive exploitation of groundwater.

New Insights into Environmental Challenges
This public lecture is an opportunity for students, lecturers, and practitioners in the fields of geology and the environment to gain first-hand insights from experts. The two speakers will discuss the technical and strategic challenges in groundwater exploration and management, as well as the importance of mitigating environmental impacts such as pollution and seawater intrusion.
In the context of climate change and rapid urbanization, the issue of groundwater management is becoming increasingly crucial. Participants in the public lecture are expected to understand the importance of involving all parties in maintaining the sustainability of water resources for the welfare of society and the environment.
